Reflections of the Son
by Brian Henegar
Have
you ever been to a lake or stream and looked down at the water to see your
reflection? In the Lion King when Simba is trying to run away from his
responsibility to be the king he happens to see his reflection in a lake and
then begins to see his father. He didn’t feel like he could ever become
anything close to what his father was. Sometimes we don’t feel that we can ever
live up to what our Father expects of us as well.
In
Matthew 3:13-17, Jesus is baptized by John in the Jordan River. Many people
wonder why Jesus was baptized since he had no sins that needed to be taken
away. Jesus was baptized to “fulfill all righteousness” and so that God could
proclaim him as his One and Only Son. In verse 17, God says from heaven, “This
is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.” Would God say that about you as
well?
Would
he look at you as the reflection of his Son and be well pleased with your
Christian walk? Sometimes like Simba, we want to run away from our
responsibilities or expectations of what God has for us. God knows we aren’t
going to be perfect and we will mess up from time to time, but he also wants us
to get back up each time we fall and try again. As we seek to imitate Christ,
we will begin to see him more in our reflection and less of ourselves.
“Reflections of the Son” was the theme for this year’s spring retreats. We want
to thank everyone for coming and growing more in Christ’s image. Hopefully if
you missed it, you will make plans to attend the summer sessions.
